Last week was too pretty to last. Now, I fondly recall that first morning when I opened the back door to let my pound puppy out for her potty break to unexpectedly encounter just a puff of cool air, so delicate and enticing!  Break out the flannel and the pumpkin spice coffee!!!

What’s in the studio while we wait for the real autumn? I was inspired by a decor blog that featured a home with large paintings of vintage snapshots. This is a moment in time in 1967 when my in-laws came home from Boston to visit friends and family in her parents’ backyard. I know, I have a looooong way to go to get faces right. 🙂

Here I am a week later, and it’s bearable on the back porch, but just barely.

For a few moments, I laid down on the outdoor sofa and closed my eyes. The gentle breeze shifting through the neighbor’s enormous crepe myrtle blew dried leaves over the fence into my yard, a sound that is eerily similar to someone moving about, examining bugs beneath drying leaves perhaps? It was so convincing a sound that I sat up and blinked into the light a couple of times, just to make sure I was still alone.

I was inspired by a painting by Edgar Payne in a book I picked up at Half-Price Books in St. Charles, MO, at the end of the summer. I wanted to see if I could duplicate his brushstrokes in the clouds. It was so much fun!

My daughter announced yesterday that the highs at the end of this week are forecasted to be in the mid 90s. Welcome to the South, y’all!

Don’t worry; fall will be back soon. However, as I always warned my Canadian ballerina babysitters back in the day when I had small kiddos, don’t put away your summer clothes yet! If you’re dressing up for Halloween this year, be sure to have a cold option as well as a sweat option.

Scrolling through FB last week, this picture from a couple’s honeymoon caught my eye.

At least it’s always been jacket weather in Mississippi by the time Christmas rolls around; in Houston, my hometown, I remember hanging out at family gatherings to celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas on a front porch to catch a breeze even though everyone’s dressed in summer garb.  I may miss the Papas restaurants in Texas, but I don’t miss that!

Here’s my weak attempt at simplifying that gorgeous rock. I guess I thought I could do it based on my little experiment with Edgar Payne’s masterpiece. Oh, well.

I thank God for the changing of the seasons and for that little nip of fall that comes early to give us hope for cooler weather! He’s not forgotten us!
