Happy 4th of July a day late!

It seems like family gatherings happen somewhat spontaneously at my house these days.  My mom missed out on some prime time with her grands. We didn’t know a few weeks ago who all would be coming to town for the 4th, and she made plans for a quilting retreat in Mayberry followed by a road trip through New England!

A quick text message to my sister earlier in the week confirmed that two of her three kids would be in town (possibly) for the 4th. I knew I’d have two of mine–but then one left early and the two married ones came with their spouses!

The passion flower just fits this little girl to a “T”!

I’d planned on making kebabs, marinated vegetables, saffron rice, and a hummus tray.  As the guest list grew, I started thinking about making beef kabobs, Greek chicken in the oven, veggies in a hot grill pan, double the saffron rice, two Mediterranean pre-fab salads, the hummus tray with lots of fresh veggies, Na’an bread, and a cheese board–just in case!

I think she’s maybe watched some half-time shows?

On Saturday, I visited Sam’s; on Monday, I made a journey through Kroger; on Tuesday, I hit up Fresh Market; and on Wednesday, I went to Costco.

I can’t take credit for this one either. My brave sister took the photo from her position in the pool.

My sis brought a cucumber-tomato salad and dessert. After all that, we had just a couple of scraps left over.  Really.  I think I should have made a whole lot more!

My son took this picture while I prepared the kebabs for the grill.

I can testify to the fact that Pinterest saved my hide again. The food was really tasty!

It was so hot and humid that we had pop-up thunderstorms all afternoon after a few hours in the pool. Even so, we managed to enjoy our loosely planned Independence Day. It is such a joy to celebrate with family!
