Hubby and I had one more day to play in Key West before his conference started in earnest.

We decided to walk from Casa Marina, the conference hotel, to Fort Zachery Taylor.  In January, with an historic snowfall forecasted for the South (Enzo), Key West was a dream!

The day we selected to visit the fort was a day for historical reenactments, which made our self-guided tour so much more enjoyable.  Fort Zachery Taylor State Park is America’s southernmost state park, and its trails, beaches, and fort are beautifully maintained.

I reassured my always hungry hubby that I’d read online of the availability of picnic-type food in the park, so we could take our time walking the trails and examining the fort.

After touring the fort, we came upon the hot spot for the state park—the beach, complete with picnic tables and, of course, roosters.  The food stand was also in the area.

While our friends on the Gulf Coast wrapped their pipes and shivered in their windbreakers, we enjoyed a breakfast sandwich and a wrap under the open-air pavilion, relishing in the heat and the sound of waves crashing against nearby rocks.

Leaving the state park behind, we made our way back into town (not far at all). Hubby smelled coffee, so we stopped at a coffee shop across from the Audubon House. I made him strike a quick pose in front their street mural.

Hubby had been craving chocolate-covered key lime pie on a stick, and we knew that Kermit’s was the place to go for that!  Why he also need a scoop of key lime ice cream, I have no idea.

You’d think we’d be too stuffed to think about food at dinner time, but walking and shopping Duval and Whitehouse Streets for hours must burn a lot of calories. At least, I hope it does!

We were soon looking at our dinner options. We stumbled across Nine-One-Five, and we are so glad that we did! It was the best food on the island! We enjoyed the sesame cauliflower, the zucchini fritters, and the huge burger that came with a cone of fries.

While we were eating dinner, hubby received an invitation to join the conference group at Blue Heaven. We walked over for dessert. Blue Heaven is known for its mile-high key lime pie….

I promise we only had one bite each… of the three desserts that came to the table.

When you look at this picture, don’t you feel the urge to ask a certain question?
