While cutting up the first sweet Honey Dew melon of the season this morning, I reflected on our recent trip to San Diego. Hubby needed to attend a conference, so asked me and two of the “kids” to join him for a week of summer vacay.
All the way from Jackson to Atlanta and then to San Diego, I fondly recalled memories from our last visit ten years ago. My hungry tummy was especially remembering the fish tacos from The Fish Market, a lovely restaurant next to the USS Midway, the Bob Hope memorial, and the stunning larger-than-life statue of a sailor kissing a nurse at the end of WWII.
The man at the car rental place agreed that we should head there first.
San Diego boasts the most beautiful weather in the country. The food at The Fish Market was good, the staff was friendly, and the park with all the monuments was delightful. We stretched our legs and enjoyed the cooler-than-Mississippi temperature. For the middle of May, it was surprisingly chilly in the bright sunshine!
We stayed at Coronado Resort & Spa our first night. As soon as we could drop our luggage off in the rooms, we explored the grounds, played cornhole for a while, and then strolled along the boardwalk to the shops and restaurants. We found Mediterranean food at Spiro’s. Our middle child looked with glee on the passing plates while we awaited our order. He was not disappointed in the amount of protein on his gyro platter. The way to this boy’s heart is definitely through his stomach!
Hubby’s evening wasn’t complete until he sampled the local gelato at Parfait Paris. Their pastries are probably better than their gelato!
The next morning, hubby Ubered to the Conference Center on the other side of the bridge. One side of the Coronado Bridge is closed one day a year for a 5K benefitting Navy families, and we happened to be there for the special day! I tuned into the Pentecost Sunday service going on at my home church and sat on the patio of my room. Soon, I was also listening to the amazing Navy band serenade walkers–and me and all the pink flamingoes in the nearby pond–for about 3 hours.
The kids and I checked out of our rooms at 11 and headed for the Barnes & Noble that’s in an old theater. We took our time meandering through the store and picked up some goodies. Then we set our sights on the Lego Store. The open-air mall is gorgeous and hosts all the fancy stores you could ever want to visit, including the LoveSac store, but that’s another story!
After the Lego Store, we paused in the Typo Store. All three of us found lots to explore; the prices are good, and the collection of desk items is an eclectic mix of functional and silly. We especially liked the display of hanging typewriters.
It was 3 o’clock, and we were hungry. My daughter spied a CAVA nearby, so we joined the long cue. Hubby soon called, sounding a little hungry-anxious (hanxious?), so while he Ubered to us, I ordered CAVA online for him. It was ready the moment he arrived!
We shopped at all the outlets in the immediate area but still came out unincumbered by bags. We’d save serious shopping for another day!
