After our quick visit to Monticello and UVA, Hubby and I drove the scenic route to White Sulfur Springs, WV, for his conference at The Greenbrier.

The drive on Hwy 64 West through glorious autumn-colored leaves encouraged us to drop our need to follow a plan and add a little spontaneity to our lives.

Glimpsing a particularly beautiful area ahead, Hubby made a quick decision to veer our vehicle onto the exit for Skyline Drive.

We paused at the nearest visitor kiosk to see just where we were. We obviously unfamiliar with our surroundings!

We opted to try to enter the Shenandoah National Park, hoping it wasn’t closed due to the government shutdown. A Ranger in the guard shack waved us in.

We didn’t venture too far—just about 20 minutes “out and back.”  Neither of us had heretofore touched a foot on the Appalachian Trail, so when we saw a trailhead marker, you can guess what we did.

We walked up and down the trail for a few minutes and got photos of each other “hiking the Appalachian Trail!”

After that fun respite, we got back in the vehicle and made a beeline for The Greenbrier!
