Y’all, I’d never heard of The Breakers before Hubby announced we’d be attending a conference there in September 2025.

If you live near Palm Beach, however, The Breakers is iconic and ooh la la.
The current hotel is 100 years old and one of Henry Flagler’s first luxury hotels. Everyone (U.S. presidents and the Duke and Duchess of Wales, among the host of VIPs who’ve stayed here) asks for a room at the breakers—the side of the extensive grounds where the ocean crashes against piles of strategically placed granite.

I guess our Southern accents, or something, wowed the hostess at check in because she gave us a room at the breakers on the mezzanine level, where you feel like the ocean is just outside your window. She also recommended the crab nachos from the Seafood Bar, one of 10 eateries on site.

My mom asked me before I left for Palm Beach what on earth I’d find to do while Hubby was in his conference. I promised her that I’d find something to do even if the dire weather forecast of thunderstorms every day was true.

Each morning dawned beautifully clear. The storm clouds inevitably arrived around lunchtime.

Every morning, I walked the beach, stopping from time to time to examine the tons of unbroken shells for treasures. After that, I stretched out under a complimentary beach umbrella and consumed a couple of books* that I’ve had on the backburner.
On our last afternoon in Palm Beach, Hubby had some time to explore. We walked about 15 minutes to the Henry Flagler Museum and learned all about the man whose vision laid the foundation for the resort culture in southern Florida.

It’s a fascinating story, and you can read about him here!

After a few hours of strolling through the museum, we were ready for dinner. We found a Mediterranean restaurant not too far away and enjoyed some authentic cuisine. When the belly dancer came out, we’d already paid, so we made a quick exit!

We left the next morning, but not before indulging in the hotel’s European style breakfast buffet in The Circle. What a treat!
*The books I finished are Good, Butter, Best by Donny Willis and Waking Up to Dream: A Collection of Poetry by Jonathan Mathews. I recommend both! Donny Willis is a young pastor in NYC who delivers inspiration with a twist of silliness. Jonathan Mathews is an aspiring medical surgeon who is going somewhere good! This Renaissance man reminds me of one of my kiddos with his zeal for the Lord and his ambition to make a difference with his life.
