Are y’all tired of this topic yet? I hope not! I love re-visiting these memories of a glorious vacation to coastal Maine!
Our fourth morning was foggy, so we ate a fabulous Continental breakfast at our hotel, Bar Harbor Inn, strolled along the Shore Path and read historic markers along the way, cut over to Main St and went souvenir shopping til the fog burned off.
Then we drove to the Southwest Harbor and stopped at the most photographed lighthouse in Maine, the Bass Harbor Light Station. I couldn’t get that iconic picture though, due to the high number of visitors and the treacherous rocks I’d need to trip over on the way out towards the bay.
At the Southwest Harbor, we decided to hike Beech Mountain. Our first attempt to locate the “moderate” trail came to a screeching halt when I read the trailhead sign, which noted that the path we were on included “iron rings.” I immediately turned around and started back to the car saying, “Nope.” I left hubby trying to decipher from the unreliable GPS if there was another trail since I was obviously resistant to this particular one; it was actually the Beech Mountain Cliffs Trail.
We found our trailhead on the other side of the parking lot. For a “moderate” trail, it was still fairly steep. We climbed high enough to get above a rain cloud, and then climbed a fire tower to get a little higher! We couldn’t see much of anything, of course, but it was still fun to do.
After a light snack at the base of the fire tower, we headed back to the Jeep and back to Bar Harbor.
In Bar Harbor, we walked through the busy downtown looking for dinner. We finally settled on Langosta and ate a dinner of sweet potato burritos. Interestingly enough, the “Mexican” restaurant was operated by our server, a young lady from Serbia with a Polish/Ukrainian heritage–so probably another of hubby cousins. 😉
Then we strolled again through the well-lit downtown back to Bar Harbor Inn for some much needed rest. Tomorrow, we’d celebrate my birthday in Acadia National Park!
